Gender Equality in the Philippines

"Many LGBTQ+ people are scared. They deny themselves their truths because they face discrimination and violence in the very places where they should have been safe." --Nicky Castillo, Co-Coordinator of Metro Manila Pride

The Philippine society’s recognition of the LGBTQ+ created quite a stir in the country. Many of the LGBTQ+ communities in the Philippines were given the chance to voice out their plea for equality. In the past years, the LGBTQ+ community had burdensome experiences because of the discrimination that is still ever-present.

The LGBTQ+ community reiterates the naked truth of their humanity in lieu of this discrimination. Where does your hate come from? Aren’t we all human, entitled to the same rights, whether we share the same religion or not? We are created to love each other and not judge through appearance or sexuality. Being LGBTQ+ does not make you less human, it simply means you are open to love whoever you wish to love.

These communities still continue to struggle for equality and impartiality, and the usual phrases such as "it is just a phase" or "maybe you haven't found the one" are considered to be some of the reasons why they are categorized that way. Although these are some cases, colleges and universities gain interest in empowering the LGBTQ+ community as much as empowering women. The University of the Philippines, for example, promote gender fairness through their Gender Equality campaigns that have reached social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter. Other forms of media have also taken part of this such as the movie "Die Beautiful." Also, there are child actors or teenage actors who take on gay roles or express their sexual orientations freely.

The Philippines is against the certainty of discrimination of these communities. But the Philippine government helps to make sure that these fellow Filipinos are still taken care of like in the case of Jeffrey “Jennifer” Laude, a transgender woman. The Philippine National Police became more involved in the matters of the LGBTQ+ community in the past years but due to the predisposition of some Filipinos’ religion, some are still against being in conjunction with the said communities.

To ease down the commotion, here is a short story made by the De La Salle - College of Saint Benilde about LGBT.
